History / Details
- Boro Shyama Mata Temple is located in Teghoripara, Nabadwip and follows the mid-18th-century Shakta Rash tradition.
- The temple worships Goddess Kali, called Boro Shyama Mata, whose Rash Purnima idol stands 29 feet tall.
- The full idol is made only for Rash Purnima; the rest of the year the goddess is worshipped as a ghat.
- The worship system began over 300 years ago under Tantric practitioner Bhriguram Siddhanta, with land granted by Maharaja Krishnachandra.
- Priest duties belong only to the lineage of Bhriguram Siddhanta through Gadadhar, Krishnaram, and Ramgopal.
- The present temple structure was built in 1984.
- The Rash Purnima idol is decorated with gold and silver ornaments and draws large crowds.
- Boro Shyama Maa is one of the main Shakta idols during the Nabadwip Rash Utsav, along with Gourangini Mata, Elaniya Kali, and Ranakali.
