In 1987, disciples requested Bhakti Promode Puri Goswami to set up a center in Mayapur, which led to the formation of the Math.
Madhav Goswami named the Math through a letter in which he addressed Puri Goswami as the Acharya of Sri Gopinath Gaudiya Math.
The Math was formally opened in 1989 after its establishment work was completed.
The grounds contain the samadhi of Bhakti Promode Puri Goswami, who left his body in 1999.
