History & Details
- Purbasthali Bird Sanctuary (Chupi Char – Pakhiralay) is located on Oxbow Lake.
- It is a birding spot between Purbasthali, Bardhaman, and Indrakpur, Nabadwip.
- It was a winter morning in 1988 when a group of nature lovers from an NGO called The Junglees came across the oxbow lake.
- They were surprised to find a large variety of migratory birds that had made their journey from far-off lands like Central Asia, Russia, etc.
- Later on, a local body called Kashthashali Banobithi (Kasthashali Gram Panchayat) was formed by the villagers and they have been working relentlessly to preserve the biodiversity of the lake area.
- 9 km long channel of Oxbow Lake and the surrounding fruit-producing trees and shrubs attract more than 100 species of local and migratory birds.
- It covers a 3.5 sq/km area, created by the Ganga River.
- You can glance near the flocks of Gadwalls, Eurasian Wigeons, Northern Pintails, Kingfishers, Intermediate Egret, the Sandpiper, Pochard, and many more.
- The cost of a boat ride is about Rs.150 per hour.
