Our client manages the flow of electric power to Texas customers - representing 85 percent of the state's electric load and 75 percent of the Texas land area. As the independent system operator for the region, they also manage financial settlement for the competitive wholesale bulk-power market and administers customer switching for 6.5 million Texans in competitive choice areas. They are membership-based, nonprofit corporation, governed by a board of directors and subject to oversight by the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Texas Legislature. Members include consumers, cooperatives, independent generators, independent power marketers, retail electric providers, investor-owned electric utilities (transmission and distribution providers), and municipal-owned electric utilities.

 

Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Accountant to join our team. The Accountant will be responsible for preparing, examining, and analyzing accounting records and financial statements. The role involves reporting on business operations, trends, costs, revenues, and financial commitments, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and internal procedures. This position plays a key part in maintaining accurate accounting records, supporting the monthly and annual close process, and ensuring the integrity of the company's financial data.

 

Job Description

  • Prepare standard reports such as balance sheets and profit and loss statements.
  • Analyze and report on business operations, trends, costs, revenues, and financial obligations.
  • Conduct research and provide accounting guidance on proposed transactions to ensure proper treatment in financial reporting.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts in a timely manner and investigate material reconciling issues.
  • Assist with the monthly and annual close process by completing assigned accounting functions and making appropriate journal entries.
  • Perform accounting tasks related to fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing.
  • Assist in maintaining and coordinating accounting control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and upgrade of accounting systems.
  • Assist with periodic internal and external audits, including the annual external audit of financial statements.
  • Maintain regular communication with the management team, providing relevant fiscal information to ensure compliance with all applicable requirements.
  • Work with other departments to understand financial data and ensure the accuracy of accounting records.
  • Proficiently use client-server financial systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrate the ability to research accounting system transactions and resolve discrepancies.

 

Skills Required

  • Minimum of 2 years of job-related experience in accounting, with practical knowledge of financial reporting, reconciliations, and general ledger activities.
  • Thorough understanding of US GAAP.
  • Previous experience with Workday or similar financial systems.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and conducting account reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with accounting journals for month-end close procedures.
  • Ability to initiate research in accounting systems to understand and resolve transaction issues.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to relay fiscal information to management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.) and accounting software.

 

Education/Training/Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Required).
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CPA Candidate.
