Pay Rate: $22.93-31.34 based on experience
HOURS:
Full-Time 37.5 hrs per week


JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Specialty Courts Administrator, the Peer Recovery Support Specialist provides peer support services as part of a multi-disciplinary team to persons with mental illness and/or substance use disorder. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist will function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills. The Recovery Support Specialist will primarily work with clients individually but may also work in group sessions as needed.  Work assignments will be based on client need.

ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
  • Must have knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes.
  • Must have experience working with individuals with a range of health and social care needs, specifically in the fields of substance addiction, homelessness, mental health, and/or criminal justice.
  • Must have knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery.
  • Must have awareness of the importance of recovery in living with mental illness or substance use disorder.
  • Must have the ability to interact with various types of people.
  • Must be familiar with Van Buren County and available services.
  • Must have a minimum of two continuous years in personal recovery after the age of 18.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, including working from remote locations and collaborating with other team members via phone, email, video, or other methods.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a clean driving record.
  • Must have mental illness, substance use disorder, or co-occurring disorder(s) and have received treatment from a public or private provider.
  • Must be patient, tolerant, caring, mature, and understanding.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 
  1. Provide recovery education to program participants and graduates for every phase of the recovery journey from pre-recovery engagement, recovery initiation, recovery stabilization, and sustained recovery maintenance.
  2. Utilize the participant’s experience, skills, and personality to develop empowerment skills and combat stigma through self-advocacy.
  3. Provide hope, encouragement, support, self-determination, and connection to program participants and graduates.
  4. Assist program participants and graduates to identify their personal interests, goals, strengths, and weaknesses regarding recovery.
  5. Promote self-advocacy by assisting program participants and graduates to have their voices fully heard; their needs, goals, and objectives established as the focal point of services.
  6. Actively identify and support formal and informal linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self-help groups, professional services, etc.) that support recovery goals.
  7. Identify barriers (internal and external) to full participation in community resources and develop strategies to overcome those barriers.
  8. Facilitate (via personal coaching) the transition from a court directed case plan to a self-directed recovery plan.
  9. Develop relationships with community groups/agencies.
  10. Provide transportation services to program participants and graduates as needed.
  11. Maintain a high level of communication with Specialty Court staff.
  12. Observe all rules of confidentiality relating to clinical information and treatment, both internally and when dealing with external agencies or individuals.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:
Must possess a high school diploma or GED. College attendance is preferred in the field of the social sciences, but not required. Related experience in the field of social sciences is also preferred, but not required. Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Michigan Peer Recovery Coach certification preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The individual in this position is an at-will employee.  Must adhere to the Court’s Model Code of Conduct for Judicial Branch Employees.  Employment is dependent on background check, criminal history and fingerprint check, and drug screen.  Applicant must complete County application form.

WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing five to twenty-five pounds.
